Answer

As I wrote about in an earlier

post

, both home and house are used as nouns with small differences in meaning, but home has other uses that have a different grammatical function: home can be used as an
adverb
http://www.learnersdictionary.com/definition/adverb
and as an
adjective
http://www.learnersdictionary.com/definition/adjective
.

When home is used as an adverb it means "to or at the place where you live." Below are some examples of home as an adverb.

  • After school he went straight home [straight to his home/house].
  • His wife is on her way home from work.
  • They liked coming home to a tidy house after vacation.
  • I'd rather stay home and watch a movie than go to the theater.
  • The children are ready to go home.

When home is used as an adjective it means "of or relating to a home or family" as in the following examples.

  • The children have an enriching home life.
  • He gave her his home phone number.

It can also mean "designed to be used in your home" or "done or made in your home" as in the following examples.

  • They bought a new home entertainment center.
  • She always enjoyed home cooking when she visited her family.
